Delivered-To: hlleibbrandt@onsbrabantnet.nl From: Wendy To: hansleibbrandt@onsbrabantnet.nl Subject: Leibbrandt family in Santa Cruz, California, United States Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2017 20:44:51 -0500 Hello. My name is Wendy Alexander, and I believe I am related to the Leibbrandt family that lived in Santa Cruz, California. I am also very nervous to be writing someone who has so very much more experience in genealogy than I. I am not positive how to put the genealogy I have into an email, and it would be very difficult to explain with only a GEDCOM file. Also, please be patient as I seem to have three separate connections to the Leibbrandt family in Santa Cruz. It is very tangled! Much of my information comes from United States Census records, online genealogy sites, and California newspaper items-- they can be erratic on dates, the spelling of names, and other information. I am using in this email only the "Leibbrandt" spelling of the name, although I have found it spelled several ways for the same individual in many cases. What I know is this: August (or Augustus) Uhden, born about 1811 in Germany, came to the United States sometime before 1836. He married about 1836, Dorothy Leibbrandt, who was born about 1810 in Germany (I have found her in various Santa Cruz, California news articles and census records as 'Kate Dorothy', Dorothy, or Dorothea). I have no information on when she and her family may have arrived in the United States. It is only in the last day that I confirmed her last name was Leibbrandt from a transcript of her son, Henry's, death certificate, although it was spelled on the certificate as 'Liebrant'. From United States Census records for 1850, I found August and Dorothy living in Springfield, Ohio with their children, as follows: Mary, born about 1837 in Iowa state Elizabeth B., born about 1839 in Iowa state Sophia, born about 1841 in either Iowa state Henry, born 1845 in Ohio state Caroline, born 1846 in Ohio state it was shortly after 1850 that the family started to relocate to California. I found a document in Noble county, Indiana, that gave guardianship of Sophia, John, and Caroline Uhden as heirs of Augustus Uhden, to John Leibrandt. It was filed on 16 January 1860. However, August Uhden seems to have traveled to California in advance of the rest of his family, as I have them on an 1860 Census in Santa Cruz, California. Other documents show that "John" Uhden, was actually Henry and that his middle name was John. In Santa Cruz, I have the following: August Uhden arrived in Santa Cruz in 1856. He died there in 1862. Dorothy, his wife, died in Santa Cruz in 1891. Mary Uhden married (1) Henry Hill in Santa Cruz about 1857, their first child was born in 1858. After his death, she married (2) Charles Kaye, who was from England, about 1868 as their first child was born in 1869. Elizabeth B. Uhden married Henry Call in Santa Cruz on 21 February 1858. Sophia Uhden married Evan Lukens in Santa Cruz on 22 July 1863. Henry Uhden married Nellie (Martha E.) Hall in Santa Cruz on 24 Dec 1874. This is where the second Liebbrandt connection occurs: Nellie Hall's sister, Clara Hall, married a Jacob H. Leibbrandt (b. about 1845 in Indiana) in Santa Cruz on 01 October 1875. I believe he was the son of Jacob John Leibbrandt, b. 1815 in Germany. I also suspect that it is this same Jacob John Leibbrandt that was given guardianship of Sophia, Henry, and Caroline Uhden in Noble county, Indiana. As far as I've been able to determine, this Jacob John Leibbrandt married Christina Custer in Indiana about 1837, and their first child was born in 1838 in Indiana. Caroline Uhden married (1) John Morgan Smith in Santa Cruz on 31 December 1865. Following his death, she married (2) William Leibbrandt (born 1846 in Indiana) in Santa Cruz about 1884, the third Leibbrandt connection. My own connection is through Henry Uhden and his wife, Nellie Hall. Their children were (all born in Santa Cruz, California): Floyd Edmund Uhden, born 1877 Iva C. Uhden, born 1882 Hazel C. Uhden, born 1886. She married Jerome Coleman Kelley in Santa Cruz in 1903. Their eldest child , Eleen Lucetta Kelley, born in 1904, and married Lee Edwin Alexander in Santa Cruz on 24 June 1923. Lee and Eleen's eldest son, Lee Noble Alexander, was born 20 August 1931 in Berkeley, California - died 01 May 1965 in Sparks, Nevada. He married my mother in Concord, California in 1957. I am their only child, divorced, with no children of my own. Carrol H. Uhden, born 1889 I hope I made the lineage and connections understandable. It has been difficult to piece together information beyond what my grandmother, Eleen Alexander, told me about her parents and rest of the Uhden family. I recall her mentioning a connection to the Leibbrandts in Santa Cruz, California, but no real information about them. My mother also recalls some stories she was told about the Uhdens and it matches much of the information my grandmother had told me. Please do not hesitate to ask if I have not been clear on something. It is my hope that the information I have written will connect with information you may have. I have looked online for many years to attempt to find any immigration records or ship passenger lists and have found nothing that connects to information I have found. I apologize for the length of this email. I could not think of any other way to clearly present the information I have on the background of my family and the Liebbrandt connections. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I would greatly appreciate any information you may have to share, and I understand that it may not be possible to make any connections between your information and mine. Also, please understand that I am not asking you to research for me, but simply to share if any information you have matches what I have written. I will certainly understand if you do not wish to spend the time to look for connections-- you have a great amount of information on your website, and the fault is mine if I have overlooked an obvious link. Again, please accept my sincere thanks for any assistance you may wish to give me. Wendy Alexander wendyinwv@atlanticbb.net
