Copyright 2003, Dale Lee Wahl NOTES: The following data is taken from Dale Lee Wahl's "Working Book Chapters". This data is still in working condition, and not all data is yet entered and corrected. The source references have only been started. The users of this data need to understand that this is the existing status of this data and not attempt to use it without further independent research on their part. We have edited the basic database this data is drawn from to not include too many folks after about 1900-1910 time frame. Even when we do, we try to edit the data to ensure that we do NOT give specifics in the file on those reflected as still living. The user of this data will have to forgive us for editing this package in this manner, but we must recognize that some living people do not care to have their own data readily available to the whole world. Elsewhere at this site you will find a set of databases that Curt Renz has put together over several years on the many Hoffnungstal Bessarabia families. You will also find copies of newsletters for the village of Hoffnungstal Bessarabia on this site. We owe many thanks to people who supported building the family data in the George Leibbrandt book "Hoffnungstal und Seine Schwaben". Also in this particular families data, we need to give special recognition to Paul Reeb personally for his great contributions to making much of the Hoffnungstal family data available to us. ******************************************************************************** FIRST GENERATION 1. Occupation: Zieglermeister. "Er war Fuehrer der "Weissacher Auswanderungsharmonie der Kinder Gottes", die im Mai 1817 ueber Ismail nach Kaukasien auswanderten, 6 Kinder." ". . . und zog an deren Spitze mit Frau und 5 Kindern im Mai 1817 nach Kaukasien aus." The "Swabian" expeditions that Johannes Leibbrandt was a member of has been well documented. Georg Leibbrandt's "Die Auswanderung der Schwaben nach Russland 1816 - 1823" has been one of the leading works on the subject. These treks varied from the earlier folks route because the decided to emigrant all the way down the Danube from Ulm to the Russian river port at Ismail at the mouth of the Danube in the Black Sea. There are several current works on these trips. The "Fateful Danube Journey" offers a true account of the Emigration to Russia 1816-1817. This book is available from the GRHS folks at Bismarck North Dakota. Starting on page 39 of "from Catherine to Khrushchev" by Alan Giesinger, we can also gain insight into what this trip meant to so many of our people during this era. Then Chapter 3 of "Homesteaders on the Steppe" provides more details of this trip. All three of the books are highly recommended reading for those interested in studying the history of these people. Because this information is readily available to folks, we will not try to go into it too deeply here. However, since Johannes was so instrumental in one of these groups trip, we shall stop here long enough to relate in general terms some of the information necessary to gain insight into his last months of life, and how he lost almost all of his family members. The terms "Swabian", "Pietist", and "Separatist" all have special meaning for these folks. There is enough material for a stand alone book on these subjects as it relates to these folks. The Swaibian Separatists were involved in the millenarian beliefs, but also had other sound reasons for wanting to immigrate. The political situation in Wuerttemberg was bad, both in the government and in the church. The weather had created disaster. Many conditions in Germany was deplorable and in a state of turmoil. The invitation that was offered by the Russian government was an inducement that caused many to decide to make the trip. The folks made the trip as families in groups called "harmonies". Johannes formed up one of these hormonies, the Weissach Harmony. The Weissach Harmony was among the first columns to depart. Johannes brought them to Ulm where they embarked on this fateful journey about the middle of May 1817. The making of the trip is best told in the reference discussed above. The Oetlingen Harmonyn was led by Johann Georg Bidlinmaier and Jakob Lutz of Plochingen. Sixty-four families from these two harmonies were quartered for many months at the end of their trip in the Catholic Villages of the Kutschurgan district. These 64 families were settled in the new colony of HOFFNUNGSTAL, fifty versts west of Tiraspol of the Dniester River. They were later joined by several members of the Backnang and Marbach harmonies. From page 39 of "Homesteaders on the Steppe", "Of the 1,500 immigrant families who had set out on the ill-fated expedition to the mouth of the seven-streamed Danube, only a remnant of 400 made it to the Caucasus. The Chiliast dream of the pious pilgrims who had hoped to see the coming of the glorious millennium lay shattered in the dust. Along the Danube route nearly 3,000 souls were doomed to an early tragic death in the perilous ports of Galati, and Ismail or at the precarious way-stations of Teplitz, Tatar-Bunar, Akkerman, Ovidiopol, and Grossliebental. The majority of the fortunate survivors found a haven of refuge and a land of promise on the fertile steppe above the Black Sea." He married Christine Katharine Conrad, daughter of Johann Adam Conrad and Christina Barbara Lindenmaier, 12 Apr 1785, in Unterweissach. Born, 2 Apr 1763, in Unterweissach. Died, 24 Sep 1817, in Ismail. Children: i. Johann Adam. Born, 9 Mar 1786, in Unterweissach. Died, 10 Oct 1817, in Ismail. ii. Anna Maria. Born, 31 Mar 1787, in Unterweissach. Died, 19 Mar 1801, in Unterweissach. 9 v. Christina Barbara. 10 vi. Immanuel Jakob. NINTH GENERATION 9. Christina Barbara Leibbrandt. Born, 26 Sep 1802, in Unterweissach, Germany. Died, 13 Mar 1826, in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. This person along with her younger brother Immanuel Jacob Leibbrandt, were the only two surviving children of the Leibbrandt family to finish the trek from Germany. The German From Russia Heritage Society HERITAGE REVIEW (VOL. 11 No. 3) for September 1981 contains the story of the Leibbrandt family and how all but the two children were lost at Izmail in September and October of 1817. She married Johann Michael Wall, son of Johann Leonhard Wall and Anna Maria Flander, circa 1821, in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. Born, 2 Dec 1798, in Owen, Kirchheim, Wuerttemberg, Germany (Owen, reflects strange information for him and his earlier brother!). Died, 16 Feb 1839, in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. Occupation: "Schultheiss". "Anmerkung bei Eintrag im Taufbuch: + 1803; nach Aussage der Mutter ist nicht dieser, sondern der unmittelbar vorhergeborene gleichen Namens gestorben. T. M. Bausmann Diac.: "Diese Aussage stimmt nicht, vgl. oben bei Kind Nr. 3!" - Im Totenregister konnte der Eintrag anno 1803 nicht festgestellt werden" This information is contained on page 465 of the Georg Leibbrandt Hoffnungstal book. It has been looked at by the author who does not do German, and it is felt that it reflects a vision (dream) that this young Michael had in 1803 where his younger namesake (Johann Michael born and died 1796) brought him a special message that he in turn shared with his mother. Hopefully someday we will be able to get this read correctly and then can update it here. Another twist to all of this is as follows. The birth register for this Michael reflects he died in 1803 with some German writing not understood by the author. Perhaps this statement above is pointing out the inadvertent entry in the wrong part of the register. Let us take another try at it . . . He married Christine Barbara Wall, daughter of Johann Georg Wall and Friederike Ackermann, 28 Oct 1852, in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. Born, 29 May 1831, in Hoffnungstal, Cherson, South Russia. Died, 20 Jul 1904, in Hoffnungsfeld, Cherson, South Russia. Grandmother of Dr George Leibbrandt of Bonn Germany. George is accredited as author of the Hoffnungstal book. The Germans from Russia Heritage Society HERITAGE REVIEW (Vol. 11 No. 3) for September 1981 contains a history on the Leibbrandts. This is where a good deal of the information was obtained on this person. This family can be found in the 1858 Hoffnungstal census on page 681 (RL 29) of the Stumpp book. We can also see this family on page 333 of the George Leibbrandt Hoffnungstal book (Hoffnungstal Und Seine Schwaben). Children: i. Johann Michael. They made their home in the Ash Creek area on land three miles south of the church site. Their first home was a sod house and later they built a large two-story frame house. In the George Leibbrandt book, we can see that Elisabeth and Johann Adam Leibbrandt were supposed to have went to Indianola Nebraska in 1884, and took Jacob and Gottlieb with them. It should also be noted that we cannot find them in the Paul Reeb listing of German Russian folks who immigrated to Cheyenne County. After the death of John, Elizabeth moved into McCook. On page 347 of the Georg Leibbrandt Hoffnungstal book, it is reflected that this Mathilde may be the daughter of Christian and Louise (nee Harsch) Wall. The data is reflected with a question mark. We have data in the archives to reflect that Christian and Louise's daughter, Mathilde, married a Gottlieb Fiechtner. Because of this information as stated above, we have reflected this Mathilde being the wife of August Lutz. If any one posses information that will either confirm or set this data straight, it is requested that it be provided. Until such data is provided, we will leave this relationship as it now sets. Occupation: Ministerialdire. He married Martha Gretel Brinkmann, 27 Oct 1950, in Bonn. "Dr. phil., Ministerialdirektor a.D. in Bonn." This is the famous Dr George Leibbrandt we refer to in these files so much. Georg is accredited for being the author of many of the works that has become to be so meaningful for many of our German Russian folks. There are some folks who have some bad things to say about him. It has been said, that anyway you slice him he was still one of Hitlers Nazis during WW II. It is also felt that many of the works that bare his name are not wholly his work, but the effort of several folks, and he merely put his name on them because of the position he was in at the time. There is also a feeling of his being a fellow who was after somebody to cross his palm with money before you could get him to do anything. One instance is when some folks tried to organize the English interpretation of the Hoffnungstal book and went to Germany to talk to him about it. Let us look beyond some of these negative things, and see if we can better understand a little the history on this fellow. First it should be recognized that George was native son of the "steppe", having been born in Hoffnungsfeld a daughter colony of Hoffnungstal. He attended the church school in Hoffnungsfeld and then the "Zintralschule" in the mother colony, Hoffnungstal. He went on to pursue ever higher education. He went to the humanistic Gymnasium in Dorpat 1914 - 1917, made his "Abitur" in 1919 at the state Gymnasium in Odessa. In 1920, he went to Germany where he did graduate work in theology, philosophy, economics and history at the universities of Tuebingen and Leipzig, and received his doctoral degree in 1927 at the age 27. In 1923, George was engaged in working for this Landsleute, became president of the Black Sea German Student Association In 1928 he studied international law and relations at the Sorbonne and the London School of Economics. He then returned to Leipzig and was appointed as an assistant at the Institute of Culture and World History. He was commissioned by the Association of German Science to do research on the German People in the Soviet Union. From 1929 - 1931 he was employed at the Reichs-Archive and published a book on emigration based on archive materials. A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, also enabled him further research from 1931 - 1933 in Canada, USA and Geneva. Dr Leibbrandt was commissioned 1934 - 1940 by the Foreign Office to undertake a study of the peoples in Eastern Europe. At the University of Berlin, he was engaged as a teaching fellow in the department of Foreign Studies. He lectured on the history of the people of Eastern Europe. Even before WW II, he advocated the idea that the peoples of Eastern Europe have the right to self-determination and national independence. Even while fully recognizing the many achievements of the Russian nation (for example in the sphere of culture and colonizations), he saw no reasons why the Moscow state should continue to dominate other nationalities in the Soviet Union against their will. He espoused the cause for national independence - not only for the Baltic states - but also for the cause of national independence of the Ukrainians, the White Ruthenians, and the people of the Caucasus and Turkestan. Therefore, long before the more current rebellions for independence, he stood up for the liberation of these peoples from the tyrannical power of Moscow. After the Reichsministerium had been established, George was assigned the post of Ministerial Director and Chief Divisional Leader in the occupied territories during WW II - 1941-1943. During this period he vigorously opposed the Nazi conception which regarded the peoples of Eastern Europe as folks who were "sub-human elements" that were to be exploited, and he actively supported their political aspirations to national independence and sovereignty. On account of his attitude, towards the freedom-loving ethnic minorities of Eastern Europe, George came into sharp conflict with the official policies of the Hitler regime. In 1943 he resigned from this post and served in the German Navy until the end of the war. Later he received commission as Economic Advisor in Bonn. After the war, George was active in the "Landsmannshaft of Germans from Russia" from its first inception. He was a member of the advisory council, served as the chairman of a special committee and as president of the conferences of delegates. Some of the works alluded to above should be reflected so we better understand George's contributions to the records of these folks. As we said earlier, George was accredited with the authorship of many important books and articles of historical significance, he was a very prolific publisher. Some of his more famous works are the well researched book "Die Auswanderung der Schwaben nach Russland 1816 - 1923" and the first publication of the "Gemeindeberichte" of 1848 under the title of "Die deutshen Kolonien in Cherson and Bessarabien". This collection of stories written in 1848 by the villages' own people regarding the history of their village, have now been scattered to and fro with many of them be interpreted and published by many folks. George published the volumes of "Sammlung Georg Leibbrandt" which was historical sources and materials for assisting in the researching of the ethnic Germans in Eastern Europe. He done a series starting in 1944 which comprised seven cartographical works with complete listings of the German Colonies, "Die deutschen Siedlungen in der Sowjetunion". Other works were 11 volumes of "Buecherei des Ostraumes" which dealt with peoples and problems in Eastern Europe, such as titles - Ukraine, Caucasus, Turkestan, Comintern. and some smaller monographs on "Bolschevism". George's work was not restricted to just the world he physically passed through. He also dealt with major political and economic problems of India, South America, Africa, even the American Economy and the Germany and the European Order, as well as other international subjects, in his "Weltpolitishe Buecherei". So it is up to each of us to weigh for our self what this man was all about. It could be said, that anyway you size him up, you must recognize that the man made a lasting mark. He was well educated and professionally recognized as a person who authored and published a lot of important works. vii. Friedrich Wilhelm (Fritz). The family that is being assigned to this fellow is being done out of speculation. There is differing dates between the AHSGR records (see card C26-14) and what is reflected in the Leibbrandt Hoffnungstal book. There are two things that tend to make this connection logical. First, this Gottlieb Fiechtner as reflected in the Leibbrandt book mother's name was Leibbrandt and the many of the Leibbrandt's ended up going to McCook where this fellow on card C26-14 was married and many of his children were born. The second reason is that the only other Gottlieb born in this time frame whose father was also Gottlieb ended up in the Java ND area not the McCook area. Again, accept this data with caution as far as this particular connection goes until further research can either support it or redefine where it should be. Later information . . . AHSGR card S168-12 supports that the above connection was correct. Naturalized 20 October 1892 in McCook Nebraska. See Cheyenne County (Kansas) History book on page 475, and the Raile family book on page 151. John and Katherine both were raised and worked as youngsters on their respective farms just a few miles from each other. They first met through their respective parents, probably at the Church both families attended. After John and Katherine were married, they moved onto a half section of School Lands 10 and a half miles west of St Francis. They were to start their young married life on this half section of land, and on the 24th of January 1928 they purchased it from the State of Kansas. The land was to stay in Katherine's name for many decades. The young couple faced many of the same hardships other folks faced during this era. They were starting from scratch. They had Jim Northrup to drill a well for water and erected a windmill. Then through the following years, with help from family and friends, they built a home, barns, granary, bunkhouse, garage, blacksmith shop, ice house, gasoline shed, utility shed, chicken coop, hog shed and anything else that was needed. They raised grain crops and summer gardens. They bought, raised and sold horses, mules, cattle, hogs, chickens and hunted wild life to supplement their food supplies. John and Katherine shared the responsibilities for the annual butchering chores of the beef cattle and hogs with Peter and Katherina Raile who were neighbors. Those early days on the farm were labor intensive. Beyond the church functions, school, the occasional neighborhood and family gatherings, there was little time for socializing. They raised their family on the farm, and in 1951 they moved into St Francis. They were there for 18 months, enjoying the city life, when John died. iii. Christina. Born, 1891, in USA.
