Jammer, maar my arm het nog nie heeltemal reg gekom nie.


You told me over the phone that you found in an SA archive  (in Cape Town ?)  
an old picture of your
grandfather who has fought in the "Boeren oorlog".
How could your grandfather be "A friend of General Smuts" ?
This needs to be explained !




Nee, my oupa was nooit ´n vriend van Smuts nie. 
Maar  in die boereoorlog was hy onder Smuts se kommando en Smuts het later 
vertel dat my oupa "een van die dapperste manne was wat hy ooit in die 
boereoorlog gesien het". Dit was vir Smuts die offisiele rede om my pa 
van die galg te red en die doodsoordeel te versag tot lewenslang tronk.

Meyder Johannes Leibbrandt     Gen. 11
    Born 19.04.1878 in Smithfield,  †  17. 06. 1954 in Pretoria
Fought in the Anglo-Boer war Commandos as heliograph en scout.1899-1902. 
He was one of the  "bittereinders" (= hy het uitgehou tot die einde van die oorlog)
He fought onder the commando of General Smuts. 
In WordWarI against South-West he refused to partake in the fight against 
the German Deutsch-Südwest. 
Therefore he never got a higher rank than Sergeant-major and so he worked as 
instructeur in the army. He lived in Potchefstroom and later in Pretoria where 
he was a municipal-member and welknown as "Oom John"


He died in Pretoria general hospital.
